Column: Messi-ah or just Messi? Doesn't matter

PARIS (AP) -Two months ago, Pele was asked the same question many people are asking again now: Is Lionel Messi better than you were?

"Difficult to say," the great man replied. "When Messi has scored 1,283 goals like me, when he has won three World Cups, we can talk about it again."

There are two ways to understand that answer.

One, of course, is 'No.' His latest record-setting five-goal feat in the Champions League notwithstanding, Messi still cannot definitively be called the greatest footballer of all time. Perhaps no one can.

But the other and more diplomatic point Pele possibly was trying to make is that, unlike the Brazilian, Messi is still an art work in progress. He has not finished sculpting his place in football history. Not even close. Messi, greatest ever? Why are we discussing this now? Come back and see me in 10 years.

Also, pitting one generation against another is often treacherous, even pointless.

Rod Laver played with a small wooden racket; Roger Federer has a big graphite one. So how can those tennis legends be compared, given that the sport Federer plays bears only a passing resemblance to the one Laver knew?

Likewise, football is faster, more commercial, more all-consuming and more of a science than it was in the day of Pele and Maradona.

Today's billiard-table pitches provide Messi with a better canvas than Pele and Maradona sometimes had on which to display his array of talents.

Possibly, the Argentine also has it easier than them because he's better protected when he plays. Referees today are more alert to and intolerant of the brutal tackles that Maradona was subjected to by opponents overwhelmed by his weaving speed and guile. So, again, can Messi, Maradona and Pele really be compared, given their different eras? Perhaps the only certainty is that they can't.

As Pele told French newspaper Le Monde in January, the day after Messi became the first to win FIFA player of the year three times in a row: "There is no need to compare. Football changes."

Still, that won't stop Messi fans from placing him at the top of the 'best-ever' pile every time he does something remarkable - which, admittedly, does seem to be almost every time he runs onto the field.

"He is the best player in football's history and we've never seen anyone like him" was his teammate Cesc Fabregas' verdict after Messi put five - yes, five - goals past Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night.

The last player to score five in European football's top club competition was Soren Lerby of Ajax against Omonia in 1979. Messi is the first to do it since the European Cup was re-branded the Champions League in 1992.

"One day he'll score six," said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

That's not hard to believe.

But, objectively, all that Messi has achieved at this point in his career is the right to be mentioned in the same breath as Pele and Maradona - or Maradona and Pele, the order depending on which of those two you consider to be the best.

The World Cup remains a big black hole on Messi's CV.

"When he plays with Argentina, he doesn't have the same success," Pele noted. "People are always asking me, 'When will there be a new Pele?' Never! My father and mother shut down the production line."

But with each new record, each additional trophy he wins with Barcelona, the stronger the argument for Messi becomes.

All being well, Messi will this month or next become the first player to score more than 12 Champions League goals in a single season. He will also soon net the eight goals he needs to become the all-time record scorer in Barcelona's illustrious 113-year history. Cesar Rodriguez, at least for a few more weeks, now holds that club record with his 235 goals in official matches from 1942-55.

And Messi is still only 24. If he carries on at this rate for another five or even 10 years, the Messi, Maradona or Pele debate maybe will have a clear winner.

"When he finishes his career he may be the considered the best ever," said Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez.

Given the competition from Pele and Maradona, however, that is still a big 'if.'

The simplest and fairest solution is this: Accept that, for each era, there is a footballer who towers above the rest. Pele, Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and now, unquestionably, Messi.

But we don't need to compare Messi against those other players to understand a blindingly simple truth: The way he plays football, his humble and inventive genius, is an absolute delight to behold.

How lucky we are to live in his time.

But fans in Pele and Maradona's eras felt that way, too.

Colbert throws a Super Tuesday tailgate party

The Super Tuesday primaries were held yesterday, and "Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert could barely contain his excitement.

He likened the big political day to the Super Bowl, saying he?s even painting his face the team color -- white (and in his case, that means no paint required). And just as he would with football?s big day, Colbert decided to throw a little tailgate party. He cooked some bratwursts on a fake grill and explained his famous "ten-layer dip," a concoction of ingredients he said represents each state having a primary -- including Idaho potatoes, Virginia ham, Vermont cheese, Alaskan venison and a layer of rust from Ohio.

To get the party started, Colbert added a batch of his famous ?Republican salsa,? which was really just a bowl of mayonnaise with a dash of Miracle Whip on top. As for drinks, he whipped up a batch of margaritas. Unfortunately, he couldn't find his blender so he did the mixing with a trans-vaginal ultrasound wand.

"Usually at my parties (the wand) doesn't come out until after the margaritas," he quipped. So with the party plans in place, it was on to the results. Colbert took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and noted that the candidates were all seeking one particular voter: the working-class man or woman. He pulled out an actual blue collar from his lunch pail and put it on.

"Just an average working Joe. Hey, fellas, let's head over to the factory plant and foundry us some metal goods. Welding, am I right? You know, some of my best friends own this company," he said parodying a Romney-esque statement.

On to the results, of which there were none -- "Report" taped too early to be able to actually report anything definitive. But Colbert wasn't going to let all of his effort go to waste -- he was going to report on the results of something. So he declared that Vladimir Putin is once again the president of Russia and that the Samajwadi Party has triumphed in the India State Assembly elections.

"The Daily Show" was in the same boat as "Report" in terms of reporting results -- a taping that happens too early to make jokes about the numbers -- but that didn't stop Jon Stewart. Instead, he focused on the one state all of the candidates had something to say about today -- the state of Israel.

"That's right, each candidate took time out today from the biggest primary yet to address the American-Israel Political Action Committee," reported Stewart.

Prices at the pump ease after 27-day streak

For the first time in nearly a month, you may notice prices at the pump a little bit easier on the wallet.

The nationwide average for gasoline prices eased Tuesday, marking the first decline after 27 straight days of increases, according to the motorist group AAA.

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline fell three-tenths of a cent to just above $3.76 a gallon, AAA said.

The nationwide average was $3.48 a gallon a month ago and $3.72 a week ago. Last year at this time, the average price stood at $3.51 a gallon.

The average price is 35 cents, or about 8.5 percent lower than the record high of $4.11 on July 17, 2008.

Average prices for regular gasoline top $4 a gallon in California, Alaska and Hawaii. At $4.38 a gallon, Hawaii ranks as the nation's high. Prices are within a few cents of the $4 mark in Connecticut, Oregon and New York, according to AAA.

Wyoming has the nation's lowest gas prices, averaging $3.23 a gallon.

Oil prices hovered below $107 a barrel Tuesday in Asia after U.S. and Israel leaders met to discuss growing tensions over Iran's nuclear program.

After a meeting Monday in Washington, President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed no sign of give on competing ways to resolve the crisis. Obama urged pressure and diplomacy to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb while Netanyahu emphasized his nation's right to a pre-emptive attack.

The U.S., Europe, Israel and other nations fear that Iran may be building a nuclear weapon. Iran, the world's third-largest oil exporter, denies the charge.

"The Iranian fear premium didn't change in our view," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

Crude has risen from $96 last month amid investor concern that a military conflict aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities would disrupt global oil supplies. Analysts say Saudi Arabia and other oil producers do not have enough spare capacity to quickly make up for Iran's 4 million barrels a day of crude.

Analysts estimate crude would jump to $150 in the wake of an attack by Israel on Iran's nuclear operations.

"The risk of a supply disruption due to geopolitical factors is uncomfortably high and increasing," said Richard Soultanian of NUS Consulting.

Gas prices have been rising on the back of soaring oil prices, which have surged 10 percent over the past month amid fears that tensions with Iran will lead to an all-out war that causes a disruption in oil supplies.?

Signs of an improving economy have also boosted oil prices, as has the stock market. All three major indexes hit multi-year highs in the past week, but have finished in the red for the past two trading days.

As the Republican primaries hit full throttle on Super Tuesday, the candidates have used gas prices to attack their opponents as well as Obama.

On Sunday's morning talk shows, Newt Gingrich said that that rising gas costs would provide a surge to his candidacy, as he has pledged to get prices down to $2.50 a gallon.

"The price of gasoline is becoming a genuine crisis for many American families," he told CNN's Candy Crowley, saying it would be a "pretty big burden" for Obama come November.

Meanwhile, speaking in Georgia, Mitt Romney refused to promise a lower gas price like his rival.

"I'm not gonna come here and pander to you and say here's what your gasoline price will be if I do all those things," Romney told the Atlanta audience.

Last week, Gingrich accused Obama of slowing domestic production and contributing to high prices. Romney, meanwhile, advocates opening federal lands to drilling and easing regulations on fracking -- a controversial policy that involves pumping water into rocks to harvest gas.

In a speech last week in New Hampshire, Obama stressed that domestic oil and gas production is at its highest point since 2003, and that the United States has more working oil and gas rigs than the rest of the world combined. But he also emphasized the need to develop new energy sources, as domestic production alone is not enough to keep up with U.S. demand.
