UK Olympians appeal for help with stolen medals

LONDON (AP) ? Two British Olympians appealed Thursday for help in recovering a pair of bronze medals that were snatched from a London nightclub, while police reported an arrest in the case.

Rower Alex Partridge and field hockey star Hannah Macleod issued public appeals for the return of the medals, which they earned during the 2012 London Olympics. The thefts reportedly occurred at the Mahiki nightclub, where the athletes went following a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in honor of Britain's Olympic team.

"I'm absolutely gutted that my Olympic bronze medal has been stolen," Macleod said in a statement. "Winning it in August was an incredible highlight for me, and for this to have happened is simply shattering."

Macleod was a member of the women's team that defeated New Zealand, 3-1.

"While it means everything to me, it has no value to anyone else, and I just hope that whoever took it can hand it in or leave it somewhere that means I can get it back," she said.

Partridge, a member of the men's eight rowing team, said his team blazer was also taken.

Police investigating the alleged theft of the medals said a 29-year-old man had been arrested and was being questioned at a west London police station.

Colorado coffin races put the 'fun' in funeral

10 hrs.

Take one morbid historical story and a town noted for celebrating the stranger side of life and what do you get?

If the town is Manitou Springs, Colo., you get the Emma Crawford Memorial Coffin Races, a madcap and macabre annual event set to take place on Oct. 27 this year.

Rolling coffins made up to look like hot rods, baby carriages and the Popemobile? Check. Coffin-pushing competitors outfitted as ghouls, pirates and zombie transvestite nurses? Check. Add in a parade of tricked-out hearses and you?ve got an event that draws up to 15,000 spectators a year and earns the title as our Weird Festival of the Month.

?It?s fun, it?s quirky; people love the themes and costumes,? said Floyd O?Neil of the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. ?You have to experience it to understand it.?

It may also help if you understand the genesis of the event. As the story goes, the original Emma Crawford moved to Manitou Springs in 1889 as a young woman, hoping the town?s mineral springs and mountain air might alleviate her tuberculosis. Alas, it wasn?t meant to be and when she died two years later, she was laid to rest on nearby Red Mountain, presumably for eternity.

Alas, that wasn?t meant to be either. In 1929, after one ill-fated move and decades of storms, Emma?s coffin apparently became dislodged and took off down the mountain, ending up as a jumble of bones and casket hardware in the canyon below.

Fast-forward to 1994 when a group of chamber officials found themselves discussing how to boost tourism during the slow, post-summer season. ?The story had been known for a long time,? said O?Neil, ?and they said, ?Hey, Emma came racing down the mountain. Why don?t we have a race in her honor???

These days, the event gets rolling with a parade in which competitors show off their creations, flanked by entourages of local citizens in outfits inspired by Emma, the apocalypse and every horror movie you?ve ever seen. There may not be any flower-bedecked floats but there will be hearses ? black ones, white ones, ones outfitted with wings and guns ? driven by members of the Denver Hearse Association.

The real action, though, takes place after the parade when pairs of coffin-racing teams line up side-by-side on Manitou Avenue. Each team requires one ?Emma? who must remain prone and up to four pushers who do their best to wheel her ? or him ? along the 195-yard course faster than the competition.

The result is a serial spectacle of costumed characters ? goth girls and ghostbusters, blue-skinned Smurfs and dead celebrities ? careening down the street, hell-bent for trophies, bragging rights and $50 in scrip they can spend in local stores.

?You just see the quirkiest things,? said competitor Marlene Bizub, a frequent ?Emma? who works as both a psychotherapist and owner of the Ghouls Gulch Haunted House in nearby Colorado Springs when she?s not racing coffins.

According to Bizub, whose team has won Best Coffin and Best Entourage in previous parades, the key to the race is to build an aerodynamic coffin, ensure your ?Emma? remains prone to further reduce wind resistance and remember that ultimately it?s all in good fun.

Or is it? Even though she willingly shares tips with would-be competitors, one suspects Bizub may also be engaging in a bit of pre-race reverse psychology.

?We came in fourth in the race last year,? she told NBC News, ?so we?re out to win it this year and get that trophy.?

Trump Offers Cash for Presidential Records | FOX8.com ? Cleveland ...

By Ashley Killough and Gregory Wallace

(CNN) ? In a much-hyped announcement, real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump pulled yet another flashy move on Wednesday offering a monetary incentive in exchange for private information from President Barack Obama?s past.

Trump, in a stunt designed to draw media attention and set afire the conservative blogosphere, said he would donate $5 million to charity if the president released his college records and passport applications.

?I have a deal for the president, a deal that I don?t believe he can refuse, and I hope he doesn?t. If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications and if he gives his passport applications and records, I will give to a charity of his choice ? inner city children in Chicago, American Cancer Society, AIDS research, anything he wants?a check immediately for $5 million,? Trump said.

He added that the check will be written ?within one hour? of the documents? release and set a deadline of 5 p.m. on October 31, one week before Election Day?and also right as children are heading out the door to begin trick or treating on Halloween.

?Frankly it?s a check that I very much want to write,? he said. ?I absolutely would be the most happy of all if I did in fact make this contribution through the president to the charities.?

This isn?t the first time Trump has called for Obama to make public such records. The conservative, who flirted with a presidential bid last year, has long been at the steering wheel for the so-called birther movement, questioning the president?s place of birth.

Last year, Obama released his long-form birth certificate from Hawaii to quell speculation that he was not a U.S. citizen and may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. He has previously released a certification of live birth during the 2008 campaign. Both documents show that he was born in a Hawaii hospital on August 4, 1961. Contemporaneously published newspaper announcements also noted the birth in the Aloha State.

In his announcement, Trump took credit for last year?s release of the certificate.

?I am very honored to have gotten him to release his long form birth certificate, or whatever it may be,? he said.

Trump has said before he wants to see Obama?s college records, saying the documents contain students? place of birth.

?I?d like to see what he said. It would be very interesting. I don?t care what his marks were. I don?t care if he had good marks, I?d just like to see ?place of birth?,? Trump said in June at the North Carolina state Republican convention.

Asked about Trump?s announcement, David Plouffe, a senior adviser to the president, told reporters on a campaign bus to ?direct those questions to Boston because Donald Trump is Mitt Romney?s biggest supporter so he owns everything he says.?

CNN?s Wolf Blitzer held Trump to account on ?The Situation Room? in a May interview, as Trump continued to maintain that ?a lot of people do not think? the live-birth certificate was ?authentic? a year after the document was released. Trump also declined to offer names of experts in agreement with him.

The millionaire maintained in the interview that Obama?s birthplace is a matter of opinion, rather than fact.

?Everybody?s entitled to your opinion,? he said. ?You know my opinion and you know his opinion and that?s fine. We?re entitled ? as he said yesterday in the airplane ? we?re all entitled to our opinions and he?s entitled to have his opinion. I don?t happen to share that opinion, it?s wonderful.?

Confronted with 1961 newspaper announcements of Obama?s birth, Trump accused Blitzer of defending Obama. Trump then alleged that the practice of filing U.S. birth announcements for an overseas birth was commonplace and done for ?the benefits of being so-called born in this country,? though he offered no evidence.

How to Do the Accounts of Your New Small Business?

Anyone who has set up their own small business, (or who is in the process of doing so) will know that handling the accounts can be one of the most time-consuming and most frustrating areas of day to day management. It is also the case that most new businesses don?t have the funds when they first get off the ground to hire their own tax attorney or accountant. Consequently, most small business owners and start-ups will end up handling their own accounts and for many people this can be intimidating as they might not know how to do this.

This article will look at a number of ways you can soften the blow and get your accounts organized, balanced and legal.

    Get decent accounting software

The price of such software has come down over the years to the point where it is now exceptionally good value considering the time and effort it will save you. The only thing to bear in mind is that it will take you a bit of time to get to grips with the software, so purchase and install it as soon as you get the business going and become familiar with it before you start moving money in and out of the business. Get your accounts right from the start and you will save yourself an awful lot of time and worry later in the year. Popular accounting software solutions include Quickbooks and Quicken, among others. If you find yourself taking time to learn how to manage the software whilst the business is getting going, don?t be afraid to keep accounts the old fashioned way with a ledger. Go to your local stationers and buy a simple ledger book and enter every transaction until you are comfortable with the software.

Keep detailed records of everything that happens throughout the day

It is essential both legally and for your own records that you hold onto every single financial document, from invoices to deposit slips, bank statements to canceled checks and business receipts. There are all kinds of filing systems out there for such records ? find one that is comfortable for you as you will be using it for many years!

    Keep it simple

Don?t try and categorize every single purchase ? try to generalize them into groups. Thus you don?t need a category for paper and one for printing ink ? instead, simply have one category of stationery or office supplies. This will mean it is quicker and easier to balance all of your accounts come the end of the year.

Be consistent in your accounting methods

If you don?t like something when you first start out then find a way of doing it differently, but once your system is in place, try to stick to the same methods. This consistency will mean that your books and records are always done in the same way and will lessen the chances of errors creeping in. This is important when you are going through the books at the end of the year and even more important when you eventually hand the books over to an accountant!

Fathers Incorporated to Address Depression and Mental Health at ...

KENNETH BRASWELL OF FATHERS INCORPORATED & TIES NEVER BROKEN MINISTRIES TEAMS WITH BEST-SELLING AUTHOR?TERRIE M. WILLIAMS TO ADDRESS MENTAL ILLNESS AND?ITS EFFECT ON THE BLACK FAMILY WITH OPEN FORUM?CODE BLUE: A CALL FOR COMMUNITY HEALING?

Expert Panelists Dr. Janet Taylor, Dr. Sidney Hankerson, Dr. Derek Suite and Dr. Jeff Gardere to?Lead Enlightening Discussion on Depression: Faith, Family and Fatherhood

NEW YORK, NY ? Kenneth Braswell, award-winning community activist, author and executive director of Fathers Incorporated (FI) has teamed up with the country?s leading experts on mental health and depression to host Code Blue: A Call For Community Healing on Friday, November 16, 2012, at St. Paul Community Baptist Church, located at 859 Hendrix Street in Brooklyn, NY, from 6:30 ? 9:00pm. This community event is free and open to the public.

Co-chaired by Terrie M. Williams,?best-selling author, award-winning community activist and national mental health advocate, FI?s Code Blue: A Call for Community Healing aims to examine the too-often taboo topics affecting the African American family and community en masse ? mental health and depression. The purpose is to create open dialogue that brings together men, women, youth, faith-based institutions, resources and services.

?It?s time to TALK,? states Braswell. ?It has become clear the more and more we engage in responsible fatherhood work, that it is having a profound impact on our families, including their mental health. It?s time to address how the myriad of social ills we face are being perpetuated by our failing to initiate a serious community dialog.?

The recent alleged suicides of hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty and Soul Train legend Don Cornelius have brought national attention to the issue of mental health and depression among African American men. Conversely, it cannot be ignored that many of the social ills experienced by Black men/fathers have an adverse impact on the mental health of both women and children.

?It is my personal mission to educate everyone, and in particular the African Americans, about depression and its impact on our communities. Not knowing what depression looks like, feels like, and sounds like is killing us,? said Williams. ?Every day, we wear the ?mask? of wellness that seemingly hides our pain from the world. Now is the time to identify and name our pain ? minus the myths and the stigma that are destroying our community. We need help ? like yesterday.?

?The psyches of the Black man, woman and child weigh heavy with the atrocities borne by our ancestors and, are alive through the injustices we experience in 2012;?stop & frisk, elevated interest rates, cut rate educational opportunities, substandard food choices in our communities, the list is endless,? states Rev. Brawley. ?With these burdens to bear daily, there is little need to wonder why our mental health not only suffers, but spirals sadly out of control at times. As a community we must collectively acknowledge where we are, why we are where we are and work together to bring about healing. That is why the Code Blue forum is so important.?

The crux of the program?s mission is to promote healing, examine the state of?the family unit, and create quality mental health awareness. Expert panelists to speak on ?Faith, Family and Fatherhood? include: Co-chair Kenneth Braswell; co-chair Terrie M. Williams; Dr. Janet Taylor of The Jeremy Kyle Show; Dr. Sidney Hankerson of New York State Psychiatric Institute; Dr. Jeff Gardere of the Love & Hip-Hop show; and Drs. Derek and Darcel Suite of Full Circle Life Enrichment Center. Hosted by Senior Pastor Rev. David K. Brawley of St. Paul Community Baptist Church, the evening?s event will kick off?in the spirit of gospel, with performances by the Empire Christian Center Praise Team. David Miller, co-founder of the Urban Leadership Institute will serve as the program?s moderator.

Terrie M. Williams, one of Ebony magazine?s ?Power 150? for Activism and Woman?s Day magazine ?50 Women On A Mission To Change The World,? is an advocate for change and empowerment. For more than 30 years, she has used her influence and communications expertise to educate and engage audiences in various causes.

A licensed psychotherapist by training, Terrie is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Black Pain:?It Just Looks Like We?re Not Hurting. The book recounts her personal struggle with depression and the impact of the stigma of mental illness particularly on the African American community.? Her creation of a mental health advocacy campaign led to a collaboration with the Ad Council and SAMHSA on a national initiative of mental health recovery. The campaign garnered $2.5 million in donated national advertising and 11 million media impressions to significantly heighten the awareness and exposure. She has been the recipient of numerous honors to acknowledge bringing the issue into the forefront of our community.

One of the most popular free MLM marketing strategies needs to be BLOGGING. Owning your own blog allows you to do, say and write whatever you want, without anybody restricting your content. A blog is basically the ?HUB? or ?nerve centre? of the business and is a place where one can promote your business, affiliate products, videos, articles and anything else that you do online.

The best thing about blogs is that people trust them much more than they trust advertisements simply because they have more of the ?word of mouth? kind of appeal. Blogs also give you a chance to promote YOU. This is a company where people join people, not companies or products, so it?s extremely essential that you brand yourself as a person of knowledge and worth. A blog will permit you to do just that.

The best platform with regard to blogging is WordPress and when you purchase your website name (about $12 annually) and hosting (about $5 per month), blogging is practically free of charge.

The next best free MLM marketing strategies are VIDEO and Article promotion. For video marketing, you need little greater than a topic and a video camera (you can also use a webcam, digital camera that includes a record function or perhaps a camera phone if that?s all you?ve got). All you have to do is make a brief recording of yourself speaking on a certain topic (Example: your business, marketing strategies, tips, tutorials or trainings, products you promote, etc) and at the conclusion, direct people back towards the applicable website (either your blog, company site, capture page or what perhaps you have). Now all there?s left to complete is upload your video to YouTube and various other videos sites around the web.

Article marketing is simply the same concept, except you?re creating articles rather than videos and submitting these phones article directories instead of video sites.

Now I want to talk about one of the most popular things in free MLM marketing, SOCIAL MEDIA. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have completely changed the world and the way we communicate with one another. They have also changed the way we can build an MLM online businesses.

If you acknowledge the truth that there are over six hundred MILLION active users upon Facebook alone, you will realise that marketing your company on social networking sites is certainly beneficial to your company.

With this amount of traffic, it is very simple to source people as potential prospects for your business. What you have to remember though, is that network marketing is all about building relationships and helping people. This means that ?spamming? your own opportunity on yours along with other peoples walls is a big ?no-no?. Instead, try easing it in to the conversation naturally.

Here?s a good strategy that you can use on Facebook immediately. Try finding a few individuals who you know but haven?t spoken to in a little while. ?Add? them as a friend and start a conversation together. Try saying something like, ?Hey first name. Long time no observe, how have you been?

This will lead to them telling you how they?re and usually asking you the way you are going, to which you may reply, ?Not much, just making money as well as travelling the world? (or even something along those lines but only when it?s true), then change the topic immediately. This kind of remark will drive them insane with curiosity and since you just moved on as well as didn?t really say other things, they will find it hard not to ask what you?re performing. You now have an open to share your opportunity together and potentially have an old friend taking a look at your business. It can?t get any easier than that.

NEW ORLEANS Many parents have questions about their child's sleep problems, primarily after 6 p.m. when professional assistance is not readily available, according to an abstract presented Oct. 21 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

The abstract, "An iPhone Application for Infant and Toddler Sleep: Characteristics and Concerns of Users," reviewed information from nearly 8,000 users of a free iPhone app designed to aid sleep in young children. Of those users, 365 (4.6 percent of 8,000 users) submitted a question to an "Ask the Expert" feature over a three-month period. The app users were typically mothers (69 percent) with an average age of 28. Their children were primarily infants (68 percent of children were age 3 to 11 months), followed by toddlers (2- percent of children were age 12 to 36 months) and newborns (12 percent were age 0-2 months).

The most frequent questions involved night wakings (22.7 percent), sleep problems (22.2 percent) and general sleep (21.9 percent). Less frequently, questions related to napping (15.3 percent), bedtime (13.4 percent) and sleep safety (4.4 percent). Questions were most frequently submitted between midnight and 6 a.m. (37 percent) and 6 p.m. and midnight (22 percent).

"Our results found that the most common questions that parents ask pertain to sleep problems and night waking," said study author Jodi A. Mindell, Ph.D. "These questions are most often submitted in the evening and even overnight times when professional help is typically not available."

"Research has shown that behaviorally based interventions are highly effective for infant and toddler sleep disturbances, and yet they do require personal contact with a trained professional," Mindell said. "As a result many children go untreated."

While the iPhone application provides widespread access to some assistance for families, the study supports the need for greater accessibility to health, and in particular, sleep-related information.
