A dedication ceremony for Western Carolina University?s new $46 million, state-of-the-art Health and Human Sciences Building will be held Thursday, Feb. 28.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by tours and demonstrations in simulation and research laboratories as well as in clinical spaces.
The first structure to be constructed on WCU?s West Campus, the four-story, 160,000-square-foot building opened this fall. Customized classrooms and seminar rooms and 21 specialized labs serve more than 1,200 undergraduate students and 300 graduate students in diverse high-demand, health-related programs.
?The new Health and Human Sciences Building enhances the quality of our students? educations, enabling them to gain sophisticated clinical skills through their experiences in simulation labs, their participation in on-site clinics and their collaborations with expert faculty in newly furnished research labs,? said Marie Huff, interim dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. ?With these experiences, our graduates will be better prepared to offer the highest quality service and care in our community.?
After the dedication ceremony, guests will be encouraged to tour the building and see demonstrations in physical therapy, athletic training, human movement and nursing simulation labs, and in developing clinical spaces currently under development such as the balance and fall prevention clinic.
Visitors also will have a chance to talk to faculty members and learn more about WCU?s programs and majors within the College of Health and Human Sciences. The building brings under one roof students and faculty from disciplines including nursing, physical therapy, communication sciences and disorders, social work, athletic training, emergency medical care, environmental health, nutrition and dietetics, and recreational therapy.
Huff said the WCU Health and Human Sciences Building, which was built to energy-efficient standards, also offers unique spaces to facilitate continuing education opportunities and events such as the North Carolina Recreational Therapy Association Conference to be held Friday, Feb. 22.
